Playwright Reading - Erin Shields - ED 230, Education Building

Erin Shields is a Toronto based playwright and actor who won the 2011 Governor General's Award for her play If We Were Birds. She has been nominated for numerous awards including the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, the KM Hunter Award and five Dora Mavor Moore Awards.

 Trained in acting at Rose Bruford College of Speech and Drama in London, England, Shields is a founding member of Groundwater Productions through which she creates, develops and produces much of her work, including If We Were Birds which won the 2008 Summerworks Festival's Outstanding Production Award and was later produced by Tarragon Theatre in 2010.

 Shields' other plays include Barrel Crank (performed by Suitcase in Point at Summerworks), Montparnasse (winner of the Alberta Theatre Projects' Enbridge playRites Award), and the Dora
 nominated The Unfortunate Misadventures of Masha Galinski and The Epic of Gilgamesh (produced by Groundwater and performed at Summerworks). Erin's latest play, Soliciting Temptation, is part of the 2013/2014 season at Tarragon Theatre where she is playwright in residence. She is also working on new plays for The Shaw Festival, Tyst Theatre (Sweden), Acting Up Stage, Red Sky Performance and Groundwater Productions.
