March 20, 12:00 PM

Presentation: Challenges and opportunities for including soil organic carbon on

pastures and rangelands as an ecological good.
Speaker: Brian McConkey, Science and Technology Branch, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada

Tuesday March 20th, 2018 at 12:00pm MST

Presentation Summary: Conserving soil organic carbon is an important ecological benefit provided by pastures and rangeland. Soil organic carbon is not only key indicator of soil quality but it also represents the storage of the greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide, that has been removed from the atmosphere. However, quantifying that soil organic carbon so that it can be credited as either a ecological good or as a greenhouse gas offset is a major challenge. Dr. McConkey will discuss the nature of the challenge and the potential to gain credit for the soil organic carbon.
