The Deep Dark Woods and Kacy Clayton

November 22, 8:00 PM, Saskatchewan Cultural Exchange

The Regina Folk Festival Concert Series presents the Deep Dark Woods and Kacy and Clayton. Floods and plagues, ghosts and slaughter: woe to those who populate the songs of the Deep Dark Woods’ Yarrow. A gentle summer breeze swings the gallows ropes, flowers bloom callously on lovers’ graves. These anthems are definitely not from Eden. The Deep Dark Woods’ newest album was borne in a fever – scarlet fever, to be medically specific. A disease of the last century is a fitting backdrop for songs that dig bare-handed into the loam to unearth the corpses of old English folk and country blues. Yarrow is Deep Dark Woods reimagined by leadman Ryan Boldt, and accompanied by the same band that crafted prairie psychedelics and a “loose grungy folk sound” (Paste) for flannelites.

In Greek mythology, the sirens were mystical creatures whose magnetic voices and enchanting songs lured enraptured sailors to their doom. Kacy and Clayton’s haunting, evocative music has a similarly intoxicating effect on present-day listeners. On their second New West release The Siren’s Song —produced by avowed K&C admirer Jeff Tweedy—the startlingly expressive voice and violin of Kacy Anderson combine with the intricate guitar work and warm harmony vocals of her cousin and musical partner Clayton Linthicum.

Doors at 7:30 p.m. Show at 8 p.m. Advance tickets are $22 plus service charges and are available online through Eventbrite. $27 at the door. All ages and licensed.
